Quick answer · How citizenship affects access to crypto…

Access to crypto perpetual trading depends on two separate rules that do not always point the same way: what a trader's own country of residence or citizenship permits, and what policy the specific platform applies to that country regardless of the law. A country can permit crypto derivatives while a given platform still blocks it for its own risk reasons, and a country can ban the activity outright while a platform technically remains reachable — the second situation does not make the trade legal. Both questions matter before funding an account, since discovering a mismatch after a position is already open can mean an unexpected forced closure.

Two different restrictions

A legal restriction comes from the trader's own jurisdiction and applies regardless of which platform is used — a country that bans leveraged crypto derivatives bans them whether the venue is licensed locally, licensed elsewhere, or entirely decentralized. A platform restriction is a business decision the exchange makes about which jurisdictions it chooses to serve, often narrower than what local law strictly requires, set by the platform's own licensing footprint and risk tolerance. A trader can clear the legal question and still be blocked by the second, or technically bypass the second while still being in breach of the first. A third, narrower category sits alongside both: an individual or entity named on a government sanctions list can be blocked from a platform regardless of the country they are otherwise resident in or a citizen of, since sanctions screening operates on the specific person or entity. Most access restrictions of all three kinds are tied to where a trader lives — their country of tax and legal residency — but a small number follow citizenship regardless of residence: US citizens, for example, remain subject to US tax reporting obligations on worldwide income, including crypto trading gains, even while living outside the United States, a consequence of citizenship-based taxation that applies independent of where the trading itself takes place. A trader who has relocated should check which category — residency or citizenship — a specific restriction is actually tied to, since the two can produce different answers for the same person.

Countries with an outright ban

A small number of jurisdictions prohibit cryptocurrency activity by law. Based on Canborsa's country-by-country research, the following currently sit in this category:

A ban of this kind typically covers the underlying asset, which makes the restriction broader than the derivatives-specific rules several other countries apply. A ban is usually the outcome of a government treating cryptocurrency as a threat to monetary sovereignty, financial stability or capital controls — which is why several banned jurisdictions restrict crypto activity broadly.

Countries with retail restrictions short of a ban

A larger group of countries permit crypto ownership but restrict leveraged trading — through a licensing requirement most offshore platforms cannot meet, a client-type gate that limits leveraged products to accredited or professional investors, or an unclear regulatory position that leaves the product in a grey area. Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Turkey, Tanzania, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam currently sit in a restricted category by this research, alongside markets such as the United Kingdom and Singapore, where crypto itself is fully legal but retail access to leveraged derivatives specifically is not. See the fuller country-by-country breakdown .

Geoblocking and IP-based access checks

A platform enforces its own jurisdiction list primarily through the IP address a connection originates from, sometimes combined with a declared country at sign-up and, on more heavily regulated venues, a document check that confirms residency. This is a business control the platform applies, separate from and in addition to whatever the law in the trader's country requires, and it is the mechanism behind a service being unreachable from one country's internet connections while working normally from a neighboring one with a different legal status. Where a declared country at sign-up and the IP address a connection originates from disagree, a platform's system typically flags the mismatch for manual review, and repeated mismatches are a common trigger for an account being restricted or closed even after it was originally opened without issue.

Using a VPN to present a different apparent location changes what IP address a platform sees; it does not change the trader's actual country of residence, citizenship or tax obligations, and it does not make an activity legal in a jurisdiction where it is restricted or banned. Most platform terms of service separately prohibit using a VPN to circumvent a geographic restriction, which means doing so can breach the platform's own terms even before the underlying legal question in the trader's home jurisdiction is considered. Platforms commonly maintain, or subscribe to, databases of IP address ranges known to belong to commercial VPN providers and data centers, and check incoming connections against those ranges as a routine part of onboarding and ongoing monitoring — which is why a VPN connection is often detected and blocked automatically.

Checking a jurisdiction before signing up

The most reliable check is the current rule for the trader's specific country, since both categories above change as legislatures and regulators act — a jurisdiction that was restricted last year can move to a licensed framework, and the reverse happens as well. See the record for a specific jurisdiction, such as India , the United States or the United Kingdom , and how identity verification interacts with jurisdiction rules for the account-opening side of the same question.

Frequently asked questions

What is restricted countries?›

Restricted countries are jurisdictions where crypto ownership is legal but leveraged derivatives are limited — through a licensing requirement, a client-type gate such as accredited-investor status, or an unclear regulatory position — without an outright ban on the underlying activity.

What is access limitations?›

Access limitations are the restrictions a trader faces from either their own jurisdiction's law or the specific platform's own policy, enforced mainly through geoblocking by IP address, a declared country at sign-up, or in some cases a residency document check.
