What the law actually says

Is LayerZero trading legal in India?

Spot crypto and holding crypto are lawful in India — the state taxes gains on virtual digital assets and licenses nothing, so the activity is permitted but sits outside any prudential regulator. Crypto is not legal tender.

Leveraged derivatives are the separate and harder question: no Indian exchange lists crypto perpetuals or CFDs, no regulator supervises them, and the Ministry of Finance says plainly that crypto products are unregulated and may leave no recourse; several of the offshore venues FIU-IND moved against in October 2025 were perp or margin exchanges, cited for missing AML registration. Retail foreign-exchange margin trading through overseas internet portals is separately prohibited under FEMA.

What the contract is

The contract itself does not change by geography: a ZRO perpetual settles in USDC everywhere.

Rail
Status
Note
LIMITS
India's dominant retail rail, but crypto support is each bank's own call and has been withdrawn without notice since 2022.
IMPS/NEFT/RTGS bank transfer
LIMITS
Standard fallback when UPI is unavailable; banks aren't barred from crypto but may still query or decline transfers.
WORKS
Widely used for offshore venues that can't take INR directly, settled via UPI or bank transfer, with counterparty and freeze risk.
Debit card
LIMITS
Issuer-dependent; many Indian card issuers decline crypto merchant codes, making this an unreliable primary rail.
INR wallet
WORKS
FIU-registered exchanges hold INR balances and pay out only to a bank account in the user's own name.
