A Daml application is a set of templates, each a blueprint for a contract carrying data fields, parties in named roles, and choices. Contracts are immutable: the only thing that can happen to an existing one is that it is archived, so a state change is written as a choice that archives the old contract and creates the new one. Every template declares its signatories, who must authorise creation and who then see the contract and every exercise on it; its observers, who see it without having to consent to it; and, per choice, its controllers, who alone may exercise that choice.
For a market venue this matters in two concrete ways. First, composition: a choice can create and archive further contracts, which can themselves exercise choices, and the whole resulting tree either commits as one transaction or fails as one — which is what makes an atomic delivery-versus-payment across a separate asset registry and a separate cash issuer expressible as ordinary application code.
