The order book's root hash is anchored on-chain and positions are tracked with Merkle inclusion proofs against the original order data, so trades can be audited after the fact without every order having been written to the ledger. On Canton itself sit four components: an Orderbook Verifier that checks trades against those Merkle proofs, a Clearinghouse that holds collateral and finalises trades, a Position Registry that tracks open positions and handles withdrawals, and vaults for deposited funds. Users trade from a non-custodial Canton wallet, through the web app or through a REST and WebSocket API.
The figures Ekiden publishes for itself are 5 to 15 millisecond execution latency, throughput of 200,000 orders per second per market, and a baseline proof-of-concept fee schedule of 0.02% taker and 0% maker.
