Canton does not replicate a global state at all. When a transaction is submitted, the submitting participant node decomposes the transaction tree into views — one per stakeholder group — and sends each view only to the participant nodes hosting a party that is an informee of the actions inside it. A party is an informee of an action if it is a signatory or observer of the contract being created or consumed, an actor on the choice being exercised, a declared choice observer, or the maintainer of a contract key.
The synchronizer itself is also kept out. Each view is encrypted under a symmetric key derived from a per-transaction seed; that key reaches an informee's participant encrypted under the participant's public key.
